Concert Band Information

Concert season is when we put the marching uniforms and instruments away and move our attention to different kinds of music. The season lasts from roughly early November through the end of the school year and includes several opportunities for each group and student to perform.

Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble

ENSEMBLES

The band program is divided into three ensembles, depending on skill and experience. Students are selected into either Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble based on an audition at the end of the year, as well as considerations like need and balance. There is also a Jazz band, which students can take as a separate class, as well as after-school opportunities to play in other musical ensembles.

During concert season, our schedule is more relaxed but our expectations are not. Our music is challenging, and we require everyone at every rehearsal and performance. Please contact your director immediately if you know you are not available.

All students are expected to provide their own equipment in some manner whether that is by owning, renting from a music store, or renting from the school. Your Instrument Use Fee, which is collected at the beginning of the school year during Marching Band Season, covers your concert season instrument, as well.

1-on-1 with a professional

Lessons

Private Lessons are like getting a Personal Training session 1-on-1 with a professional on your instrument. These allow our students to progress MUCH faster than a traditional Band class would since the lessons are catered to what the student needs help with the most.

The Fall is the best time to get started with lessons. Lessons can happen before school, during Advisory, or during their scheduled Band classes. Your director will share information about how to sign up.

OTHER PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

UIL

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) hosts a Concert & Sight Reading contest every year that our bands proudly perform in. This concert generally happens during the school day so look out for more information from the directors in the spring about this opportunity.

Solo and Ensemble Contest

Our band members participate in an Anderson Band competition every year as soloists or small ensembles. These students are adjudicated by an area band director and given feedback on their musicianship and performance.

Anderson Scholarship

Top musicians from the Solo and Ensemble Contest are selected by an impartial judge to apply for three scholarships, which can be used for music lessons, camps, instrument repair, or anything music related. The musicians perform live to apply for one of the scholarships and parents are welcome to come and enjoy.
